It took just one three-point shot on Sunday for STN Sports Books to go from having a really good Elite 8 result to an exceptional one.
“Illinois beating Houston was huge for us, and getting that UConn miracle finish was great,” said Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos Sports Book Director, adding that the UConn finish resulted in an “easy” six-figure swing.
“It was a game-changer for us and swayed the entire day.” Going into the Elite 8, guests unloaded on the favorites, and they managed to get Michigan and Arizona to easily cover, but Houston and Duke garnered more than 60% of the ticket count in their respective games, only to have their NCAA Tournament title dreams end. In Duke’s case, they were up 19 points in the second half, so guests thought they were cruising…
“We needed UConn in every way possible, spread, moneyline, everything,” Esposito said. “Overall, the tournament has been much better this year because we have had at least one big ‘dog win outright almost on a daily basis. That’s really helped. The last time we had a tournament that was good from a win/loss perspective was in 2023, which was before NIL.” With all that in mind, let’s quickly review the past week in sports and peek at what’s ahead on the STN Sports App and the STN Sports Books…
UConn/Illinois
UConn and Illinois, the two underdog teams that burned guests last weekend, square off in the Final Four, with the Fighting Illini listed as one-basket favorites. Early money, though, has come in on the Huskies.
“UConn will definitely be prepared, but they’ll have to deal with Illinois height. They’re huge,” Esposito says. “In Illinois’s case, it was a team that I think everybody felt could be in this position, but throughout the course of the year, they had a lot of ups and downs. If Illinois’ bigs and their defense can give UConn trouble, I give them a shot.”
While this is UConn’s third Final Four appearance in four years, this might not be the most talented bunch Danny Hurley has guided, and the team has less depth than an Internet influencer. Illinois, meanwhile, has a big international flavor, and they play as a team, with players happy to share the spotlight.
“They protect the rim. They’re a selfless team that their guys know what their role is,” Esposito said of Illinois, “but this is a big stage and from an experience standpoint, there’s no question that Hurley and UConn have a huge advantage in that area.”
Arizona/Michigan
Arizona and Michigan might be the two best teams in the country, and they’re both coming off pretty dominating Elite 8 wins. When the game line opened with Michigan as a small underdog, the Wolverines saw an influx of early money. Whether that’s the case come Saturday remains to be seen.
“Michigan believes that they’re the best team in program history. They’re really athletic, and they play together,” Esposito said. On the other side, Arizona is one of the best teams in the country at defensive efficiency, but Michigan isn’t far behind them.
“Arizona out-hustles teams; they’re disciplined, and I think they can really relish the role of being an underdog,” said Esposito. For Michigan to win, they’re going to have to be more patient than an American waiting for gas prices to drop. Esposito said, “Arizona is going to take Michigan out of their game defensively, and they’re going to have to be really patient.”
Last Man Standing
The NCAA Last Man Standing Tournament has claimed more victims than a Spring Mountain pothole. The tournament began with 2,737 entries vying for the $55,200 aggregated prize. Heading into the Final Four, just 14 entries remain. “
Our guests are going to have something to think about with these two games because these very, very competitive numbers, really competitive matchups,” Esposito said. “You don’t have a prohibitive favorite that we’ve seen sometimes in the past in the Final Four.”
VGK
The Vegas Golden Knights are doing Vegas Golden Knights things yet again. Just three years removed from winning a Stanley Cup with Bruce Cassidy at the helm, the VGK fired its coach and replaced him with firebrand John Tortorella. The What-Have-You-Done-For-Me-Lately move seems more sudden than this week’s weather shift.
On Monday, in his first game as head coach, the Knights bested a dismal Vancouver squad, but oddsmakers are waiting to see how the Knights might change under Torts. “It’s definitely a wake-up call. He wants the team to be more explosive on offense and play faster,” Esposito said, noting that VGK overs, which guests already love betting, might be profitable for the remainder of the season and in the playoffs.
“It’s going to be curious to see how the team responds to the coaching change. I could see them winning the Cup, or I could see them with a First Round exit.”
Bets To Know
Baseball, pro basketball, hockey… the sports calendar is loaded this week, but all eyes will truly be on the men’s and women’s college basketball home stretches. The app will be ready and loaded with props, along with in-game wagering during the action.
