Undefeated 49ers Underdogs Next Week (Value Alert!), Plus More Sports News and Tidbits

The NFL season remains more constant than a changing Excel spreadsheet, like the 49ers winning yet again last weekend. “The morning games were decent for us. We were up a good amount after the morning, but in the afternoon games, we needed the Broncos against the 49ers and didn’t get there,” said Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos Race and Sports Book Director.

“The Chargers game wasn’t great because of all the moneyline bets on the Seahawks.” The Panthers’ 32-26 win against Detroit, however, made all the difference in the day. Carolina’s win knocked down a $500,000 bet, made a Red Rock, too. “Everything was kind of dumping into the Lions with the beat-up secondary of the Panthers,” said Esposito.

“We were huge Panther fans that night. It was more than double or nothing. We would’ve gone from a winning day to a losing day, but the Panthers winning outright was the best-case scenario.”

With all that in mind, let’s quickly review the past week in sports and peek at what’s ahead on the STN Sports App and the STN Sports Books…

NFL Updates

Despite the 49ers’ perfect record, they enter this week as field-goal underdogs at Seattle. Esposito sees value on San Francisco. “Seattle kind of dominated them last year a bit, especially in that playoff game, but I think there’s a little bit of value there,” he says. The Niners aside, sharps jumped on the Buccaneers early as heavy underdogs at Dallas.

They also like Chicago, who plays at Green Bay, and Jacksonville, who plays Philadelphia in London. With the Jags playing across the pond annually, this is like a home game for them. Plus, at 2-2, Philly looks to be crashing more than a Waymo. Jacksonville, on the other hand, are 3-1 (with the same ATS record) and even made a Red Rock guest $120,000 wealthier last weekend, following a $100,000 bet at odds of +120.

As Jacksonville has been steady, Atlanta looked stuck like a Honda in F1-related construction just a few weeks ago. They’ve since rattled off two impressive wins, and guests are jumping all over them this week against the Ravens, who might be without Lamar Jackson.  The Falcons are favorites of over a field goal. “Baltimore really does extremely well against some NFC teams, so kind of curious to see ultimately where this game lands,” Esposito said.

“I know Atlanta’s played really well the last two weeks, but I still think Baltimore’s a really good team. What’s fascinating about this game is you’ve got Derrick Henry against Bijan Robinson. From a prop standpoint, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Bills/Rams Clash

Arguably, the most anticipated game of the upcoming week is the Monday Night Football game with the Bills and Rams. It’s not far-fetched to say it could be a Super Bowl preview, but the loser will have an uphill battle. “We’ve only been through the first four games of the season, but if the Rams were 1-3, I don’t think you’d see the line at a field goal against the Bills. I think it would be closer to a pick, which is weird to say for the Super Bowl odds-on favorite,” Esposito said.

The Rams’ season was on the brink of folding up — like First Friday — but they somehow came back to win at Philly last Sunday. “I think that game, in a weird way, kind of almost saved their season, but that’s a huge game for both team,” said Esposito. A Bills loss and a Patriots win (against the Raiders) would put New England in first place in the AFC East. A Rams loss, meanwhile, would push them to 2-3 in a division with the 4-0 Niners and 3-1 Seahawks.

Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing entries are fading to black more than a Metallica show. In the NFL Last Man Standing contest, which nets the winner an aggregate payout of $150,000, only 287 entries are left after just four weeks. The competition began with 6,855!

“The two games that really hurt people were the Cardinals losing to the Giants, but the big one was the Vikings not covering against the Dolphins,” Esposito said. In the college football Last Man Standing contest, which pays an aggregate payout of $100,000, 3,121 people signed up, but only 198 remain.

“I don’t think we’ve ever seen such a drop-off after just four weeks,” Esposito said, noting that every week, at least half of the remaining field has been eliminated in both contests.

MLB

Monday, the Rays’ win against the Yankees knocked out a $225,000 inter-sport bet tied to New York and the Atlanta Falcons. The surprise team in baseball this season, however, has easily been the Chicago White Sox, considering they lost over 100 games the previous two seasons. In 2024, they set the modern Major League Baseball record for the most losses in a single season with 121 L’s.

“The White Sox are young, and most people couldn’t even name a player on the team,” Esposito said. “The White Sox, Brewers and Padres are the three teams we have a little bit of liability on our future book.”
